Leading the way to develop low carbon district energy

Newcastle City Council has entered into a pioneering new venture to develop district energy schemes across the city, starting at Newcastle Helix.

Working in partnership with ENGIE, the leading energy, services and regeneration specialist, the city will benefit from a number of these schemes over the next 40 years. This will provide businesses and residential properties with cost-effective and low carbon energy.

The first of these schemes is the £20million District Energy Centre on Newcastle Helix. Construction is well underway with work due for completion in Autumn 2019.

It will provide affordable heating to all businesses and homes on the site via a network of underground pipes. Non-residential properties on the site will also benefit from a cooling system and a bespoke electricity supply.

This long-term agreement with ENGIE also means customers will have a personalised energy provider on their door-step, offering maintenance and a metering and billing service.

It has been calculated that over the 40-year contract period, this scheme alone will provide a carbon emission saving of 30,650 tonnes.

Newcastle City Council’s cabinet member for employment, Cllr Ged Bell said “This unique venture is an incredibly exciting opportunity that will provide affordable and sustainable heating, advantageous to both local businesses and residents.

“It is an example of how the private and public sector can work together to deliver ambitious district energy and supports our ambitions to reduce carbon emissions for a greener city.

“So, it is very fitting that the first one of these schemes is on Newcastle Helix, one of the largest regeneration sites of its kind in the UK, leading the way in smart and sustainable technologies”.

Andrew Hart, Managing Director for ENGIE’s Urban Energy business, said: “The partnership with Newcastle City Council is an example of innovation and vision, so we are delighted to be on-board to help deliver these sustainable energy solutions.

“Our unrivalled expertise in district energy, especially alongside Local Authorities, coupled with our capabilities in construction, means we have the perfect platform to offer a wide-ranging service, with long-lasting benefits for those within this forward-thinking city”
