Helix isn’t a building. It’s a whole site – in fact, it’s the only Innovation District in the UK that’s in a city-centre.
Helix is a beacon for the transfer of knowledge between academics, industry, the public sector and wider public. There are hundreds of SMEs based on-site and thousands of students working alongside global businesses at the cutting edge of sectors like renewables, life sciences, data, and ageing.
This diverse collaboration is key for the success of research and industry, but also for global longevity. Innovators work together on-site to find answers to some of the world’s most pressing problems across health, transport, Artificial Intelligence and the environment. It’s a unique ecosystem with world-leading impact.
There are always professional photographers on-site taking pictures of the startling architecture, but it’s really the people working, researching, studying and who’ll eventually be living here that are the real gold dust. The community of Newcastle Helix.
Helix is run by a pretty unique private-public Partnership – something that was almost unheard of when it was set up - between Newcastle City Council, Newcastle University and Legal & General.
John Seager, Director of Estates: “Newcastle Helix is a world-leading example of public and private sectors working together to create a built environment that raises aspirations, increases investment appetite and inspires organisations and individuals to collaborate and ultimately change the world for the better.”

Phil Witcherley, Director of Economic Growth and Innovation at the North East Combined Authorit: “It's a real asset, both for Newcastle and North East England, and especially as we try and grow high value jobs and use the expertise in the universities and in enterprise to grow the economy in the region.”
